The Devil's Dream / Deedle Dee

Album: Come Share the Fire

v1) Late one night the devil had a dream (deedle deedle deedle deedle deedle deedle dee) Me oh my, how it made him scream! (deedle deedle deedle deedle deedle deedle dee) He jumped and he thumped and he tore his hair It wasn’t just a dream but a bad nightmare

v2) Yes, the devil had a dream and it made him cry Listen and I’ll tell you the reason why He dreamed of a baby born one day Who stole his hell-fire clean away, oh...

v3) The devil had a dream of a baby boy Who grew up full of his Father’s joy He cured the sick and he healed the lame He spoke in the light of a holy flame

v4) The devil started in to cuss and shout “I’ve got to put that boy’s flame out!” He threw him in the river then realized The flame still burned, he had been baptized!

v5) The boy grew up, yes that’s for sure He talked like no one ever talked before And when he spoke God’s fire began To burn in hearts all across the land

v6) The devil’s dream kept getting worse Oh, the dreadful way he began to curse! This man was just like a living well Out quenching all the fires of hell

v7) The devil had a dream, made him toss and turn Made his palms sweat cold and his forehead burn His worst fear was now in view Because his dream was coming true

v8) The devil woke up, the alarm clock rang The sheep went “baaa” and the angels sang The dream-child lay in the hay It was sun-up on the first Christmas day, singin’...

"Joy to the world, the Lord is come Let earth receive her king Let every heart prepare him room And heaven and nature sing, and heaven and nature sing And heaven and heaven and nature sing And heaven and heaven and nature sing"

v9) The devil’s dream had now come true There was only one thing left to do The war was on and the stakes were high This man, now born, would have to die

v10) He was too good, he was too free The established order’s enemy He meant well but his cause was lost One dark Friday on a Roman cross

v11) The dream was dead and that was that You can’t fight scientific fact It’s business as usual, life goes on There’s nothing new under this devil's sun

"But after three days of ashes and silence, the improbable, the impossible, the unthinkable ... happened! The dream ... woke up! The man rose from the dead, the New Humanity, the firstborn of many brothers and sisters to come, for this was the Dream of God. And nothing can ever be the same again.”

v12) The dream came right back from the dead (deedle deedle deedle deedle deedle deedle dee) Jesus rose just as he said (deedle deedle deedle deedle deedle deedle dee) The devil’s nightmare now will be Our hope through all eternity

v13) We’re now a family of joyful screamers A kingdom of priests and holy dreamers Even so, Lord Jesus, come Bring in the kingdom now begun!
